Hot-dip galvanized fencing for tunnel in Ommen ring road

April 2011 – The Netherlands Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management has built a new motorway between the N34/N36 junction and the N48. The original N36 has been extended by nine kilometres for this ring road around Ommen. The route includes four viaducts, a bridge over the Ommerkanaal and a tunnel for cyclists and slow traffic at Witte Paal. The cycle path has been constructed at a higher level and fenced off to ensure the safety of the cyclists. The fencing was hot-dip galvanized by Verzinkerij Wolvega and the small fastening components were centrifugally galvanized by Centrizink Wolvega.

For many years the N34 between Ommen and Witte Paal was the major arterial road between the Twente region and the north of the Netherlands, besides fulfilling an important regional function. Due in part to this double function, the N34 was the cause of many traffic problems and considerable danger. In order to increase road safety and reduce the volume of traffic on the N34, it was decided to build a ring road around Ommen. The N36 that had ended at Witte Paal was extended for this purpose as far as the N48 to the north of Ommen.

Galvanized fencing for safety

This ring road around Ommen makes the link between Twente and the north of the Netherlands much safer and less traffic goes through the centre of Ommen. The four viaducts and the tunnel mean that the parcels of agricultural land are easily accessible. The cyclist section in the tunnel at Witte Paal has been constructed at a higher level and screened off with fencing produced and erected by Holland Metaal from IJsselmuiden under contract to Heijmans Infra. The fencing and the small fastening components were hot-dip galvanized by Verzinkerij Wolvega and Centrizink Wolvega. Both companies in Wolvega have made a durable contribution, therefore, to the safety of cyclists in the tunnel at Witte Paal.
